Margaret Curley Rural and Frontier Symposium Fall 2025 (Day 2)

This is a 4 hour course put together by Nevada Nurses Foundation in support of the Margaret Curley Rural and Frontier Scholarship for Nevada Nurses. During this course we cover topics on RAID, addressing wound care, rural health, pressure injury wound management, the Nevada forensic nurse alliance, end of life care, and wellness driven leadership.

Presentation 1: 

• Demonstrate knowledge of positive behaviors versus negative behaviors.
• Demonstrate understanding of philosophies behind negative behaviors. 
• Distinguish between Punishment & Extinction.
• Understand and discuss positive (RAID) statements.
• Apply RAID to patient care, staff or peer encounters.

Presentation 2:

• Understand the burden of wounds in rural communities.
• Identify barriers to wound care access.
• Explore evidence-based strategies for improvement.
• Understand the impact of role of nurse practitioners in rural settings.

Presentation 3:

• Disseminate key findings from a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project focused on implementing a competency-based, simulation-drive wound management education program. 
• Demonstrate the critical need for enhanced wound care training among nurses to improve patient outcomes and promote evidence-based management of pressure injuries. 
• Advocate for the integration of standardized wound care education into nursing curricula and continuing education. 
• Encourage replication and adaptation of this training model to support workforce development and promote patient safety in both urban and rural care settings.

Presentation 4:

• Identify the current state of Nevada's Forensic Nursing workforce.
• Discuss the specialty and related sub-specialties that encompass practicing the full scope of one's license.
• Describe strategies in place to address the need from a sustainability and capacity-building perspective.
• List nursing opportunities that exist across the state to address all victims of crimes.

Presentation 5:

• To increase acute care nurses’ knowledge in EOL care.
• To increase acute care nurses’ confidence in their assessment skills and provide the prescribed intervention to address pain in  non-verbal EOL patients.
• To promote increased use of the PAINAD assessment tool for nonverbal EOL patients.

Presentation 6:

• Explain the connection between nurse wellness and leadership effectiveness, citing data on burnout, engagement, and turnover in healthcare.
• Describe the SAMHSA Eight Dimensions of Wellness and their relevance to leadership in nursing and healthcare organizations.
• Analyze the impact of neglecting wellness dimensions on organizational outcomes such as staff retention, productivity, and patient care quality.
• Apply evidence-based strategies to integrate each wellness dimension into daily leadership practices.
• Develop a personalized Wellness-Driven Leadership Action Plan to enhance resilience, engagement, and team performance.
• Commit to one immediate wellness-focused leadership action aligned with the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ initiative to positively influence team and community health.
